Armor of Heart

The ego cannot be conquered by the will alone. You may slay self-seeking and self serving thoughts one at a time, with the blade of your will. But they will continue to arise as long as you wield the blade of reason alone. Victory is won only when armored with a heart that loves others at least as much as the self.

God of My Heart

God
of my
heart.

I join
my purpose
with
thy will.

Make of
my crude
soul
thy divine
flame.

Break open
my calloused
heart
that I
may express
thy
love.

I sacrifice
my selfish
desires
and striving
ego
on the
alter
of thy
grace.

I extinguish
ambition’s
embers
and selfish
longing.

That I
may lose
myself
in thy
infinite
creation.

I forfeit
the I
that
I am.

That I
may
become
fate’s tool.

Instrument
of thy
will.

Bearer
of thy
love.

Sun
of thy
morning.

Servant
of thy
infinite
creation.

Not the Captain but the Sea

When I
was a
young man
and the
world more
certain.

I had
little use
for faith.

I was
master
of my
destiny.

A
captain
upon the
sea.

Armed
with
sails
of will
skill
and destiny.

Yet
often
have I
crashed
upon rocky
shores.

Surviving
narrowly
companions
matched in
skill
if not
luck.

Revealing
the precarious
nature
of fate.

And the
limits
of will
and skill
upon the
sea.

Thus
with no
more
adequate
tool.

I arm
myself
with faith.

I am
not the
captain
but the
sea.
