Monuments Built to Ego

by Zachary A. Horn

All bodies know
they are subject
to  decay.

Yet identity
seeks existence
beyond death.

Endowing
more durable forms
with a sense of self.

Defeating briefly
time’s inevitable
decay.

Monuments
built to ego
scar the land.

Polluting
the water
soil and
air.

Despoiling life
to sustain
life’s illusion.

All beings die
but all identities
fear death.

Remember me
they cry
throughout time.

Remember
the I that was
but can no longer be.
