Not the Captain but the Sea

by Zachary A. Horn

When I
was a
young man
and the
world more
certain.

I had
little use
for faith.

I was
master
of my
destiny.

A
captain
upon the
sea.

Armed
with
sails
of will
skill
and destiny.

Yet
often
have I
crashed
upon rocky
shores.

Surviving
narrowly
companions
matched in
skill
if not
luck.

Revealing
the precarious
nature
of fate.

And the
limits
of will
and skill
upon the
sea.

Thus
with no
more
adequate
tool.

I arm
myself
with faith.

I am
not the
captain
but the
sea.
