Fearless reason in an age of frightened absurdity.

A Quick Death

In a reasonable world Hillary and Trump would never have occupied the same stage. In a reasonable world, someone as grossly unqualified as Donald J. Trump would never have won a major party’s nomination to be President. But we don’t live in a reasonable world. We live in a world on the brink of self-destruction, either by climate change or nuclear war. We live in a world committing suicide, and we are all on a slow moving train driving us off a cliff. Trump cannot be understood with conventional wisdom or the analytical mind. He is our collective id, he is a death impulse encouraging us to jump off the train and dance madly over the cliff.

The status quo is killing us, but Trump gives us the prospect of a quick death. That is the only way I know how to describe the state of this race.

Be Spacious

When the mind lacks spaciousness, one is completely identified with thoughts, emotions, and roles. This state of being leads to deep unconsciousness, where the illuminated states of being that consist of love, peace, and joy are rarely experienced. A person lost in thoughts does not enjoy life, but endures it. Love quickly turns to disappointment and jealousy, and peacefulness is replaced by discomfort and anxiety. A lack of spaciousness creates a claustrophobic life, full of limitation, dissatisfaction, and angst.

Creating spaciousness in ones mind is the simple act of creating a layer of awareness around your thoughts, emotions, and roles that recognizes itself as separate from mind activity. It may start with the abstract idea that you are the experiencer of your thoughts and emotions, and have an existence independent of them. This abstraction, when grokked and applied throughout the day as thoughts, emotions, and roles are played out, begins the process of creating a layer of awareness unidentified with transient mental activity. It creates space enough to experience a thing without being consumed by it, and thus creates the opportunity to return to your natural states of love, peace, and joy.

I Once Was a Warrior

I once
was a
warrior
of great
self-importance.

A veteran
of countless
battles.

I fought
for my honor
my neighbors
and to save
the world.

I fought
always with
disappointment.

But soon
came to
crave
peace.

So I
surrendered.

My battle
unwon.

I forfeit
my honor
expectations
and desires.

And let
the world
that might be
burn.

Finally
I found
peace.

When I
let the
world be
as I found it.

Thus
the warrior
became
a mystic.

Transforming
disappointment
into
peace.

And
resistance
into
victory.

Grant Me an Audience

Grant me
an audience
with your
presence.

That eternal
creature
of the
now.

Relinquish
for a moment
your stories.

Your
glories
grievances
and games.

Lay down
your idle
chatter.

Forbearing
the pollution
of sound.

Settle
for a
moment
deeply
into the
eternal now.

Life is More Vivid by the Ocean

Life
is more
vivid
by the
ocean.

Memories
more resilient
to decay.

Perhaps
it is the
timelessness
of that
great witness.

That makes
life
less fleeting
by the sea.

Perhaps
it is the
vastness
of that
great body.

That makes
life
more expansive
and free.

Restless Minds

Our
human world
is too full
of human comforts
and too lacking
in human happiness.

Restless minds
polluting
an already
perfect world.

With a proliferation
of forms
giving unconscious
creatures
comfort.

Spreading
the dis-ease
of endless
desires and
dissatisfactions.

Naked Beings

Spare me
your illusions
that mirage
of another person.

Do not
present
some abstraction
of being.

Forbear
an expected manner
and conventional sentiments
conventionally stated.

Remove
that grin
you wear
as a mask.

Abandon
the role
that has become
your identity.

Your bundle
of biases
beliefs
reactions
and habits.

Surrender
for a moment
to uncontrived
communion
between two
naked beings.

A Western Heretic

I am a western heretic; having lost faith in the religion of my people, that constant technological progress is necessary and universally good.  Our creations reflect our inner nature, and we cannot escape spiritual infancy with technological maturity.

We built a world on the foundation of the ego’s never ending want. A world premised, on the externalization of identity and a rejection of the present moment. We built a world to divert our anxious minds, and give comfort to our decaying flesh. Abandoning inward seeking for outward buying, selling, and coveting.

The seeker became the consumer, and from cradle to grave remained an infant all his days.

We got lost in time; mourning the traumas of the past, and intermittently dreading and hoping for a non-existent future. Abdicating the present moment, which upon inspection, is never lacking.

We built a world that produces misery, in all its varied and sundry forms. Vainly hoping that one form will be better than the last, and will satisfy for a time the ego’s endless craving.

We are ugly inside; filled with envy, greed, fear, and hate. So we built an ugly world, that reflects our inner nature, in amplified and varying forms.

Were That I a Cup

A full cup
cannot be filled
possessed already
of all it can retain.

Add liquid
and it will
overflow.

Filled now
with an admixture
of old and new.

Yet appearing
as it always has
filled
and satisfied.

Were that I a cup
forever full
overfilled
an admixture
of old and new.

Concealing
the mystery
of fulfillment.

Full
to overflowing
satisfied
yet ever changing.

To Become an Exile

I feel a pull
inward
to become an exile.

To withdraw
from a public
that has become
sacrilege to my private values.

I am bewildered
that the worst in us
has become commonplace.

I am a foreigner
in my land
a place
where hate is more desirable than love
fear more tolerable than acceptance
and ignorance more comfort than truth.

I do not know these neighbors and friends
that I once assumed shared a common decency.

A decency now uncommon
as the worst in us
becomes middling.

I have become
a stranger
in  a strange land
that has lost the capacity
for self-preservation.
